November 14, 2003 By: Sandra Williams Prom shoes dresses: glass slipper fits students´ prom needsFor the third consecutive year, nearly 1,000 Chicago public high school girls will have the their prom dreams come true thanks to the help of The Glass Slipper Project. The Glass Slipper Project is a grassroots organization, which collects new or almost new formal gowns, shoes and accessories for high school juniors and seniors who otherwise could not afford clothes for their proms. Donations are collected from various drop-off points across Chicagoland and throughout the country, and are free to students. Each student will choose one dress, a pair of shoes, and accessories such as jewelry, and new makeup during a series of boutique sessions. Since its beginning in 1999, The Glass Slipper Project has provided more than 1,300 Chicagoland students with free prom dresses and accessories. Participating students receive Cinderella treatment, as personal shopper volunteers help them select ensembles from a variety of styles and sizes. Additional volunteers are needed, and parochial and private school students are also welcome to the boutique. School I.D.s are required, and though parents and guardians are allowed, students must be present to receive a dress. Pre-registration is not required. The Chicago Public Schools is the nation’s third-largest school district and the second-largest employer in Illinois, with more than 45,000 employees. The school system operates 601 schools and serves 435,000 students.
